Das Bethe-Kolloquium an der Uni Bonn stellte im November 2010 das Konzept der "Dunklen Materie" zur Debatte. Vor über 300 Zuhörern trugen die Astronomie-Professoren Simon White (Garching) und Pavel Kroupa (Bonn) ihre Positionen vor. Prof. Dr. Hans Peter Nilles, stellv. Sprecher des TR33, moderierte die Veranstaltung. Dieser Videopodcast zeigt die Kurzfassung der Präsentationen beider Disputanten.

The November 2010 Bethe Colloquium presented a debate of the concept of “dark matter.” Astronomy professors Simon White of Garching and Pavel Kroupa of Bonn stated their positions in front of an audience of more than 300. Dr. Hans Peter Nilles, director of the Bethe Center, moderated the event. This video podcast shows the presentations of both debaters.

Kroupa hat die Existenz Dunkler Materie für das lokale Universum - also die Milchstraße und die hunderte von Galaxien in ihrer Nähe -  ihrer Nähe untersucht. Er argumentiert,  die dort gemachten Beobachtungen seien mit der Standardtheorie weitgehend unvereinbar.  Das aktuelle kosmologische Weltbild sei damit nicht mehr haltbar, und die Physik  stehe nun vor der großen Herausforderung, eine neue kosmologische Theorie  zu entwickeln.

Simon White hält dagegen,  Dunkle Materie erkläre die weitaus meisten Beobachtungen im Universum hervorragend - angefangen von der Struktur der Galaxienhaufen und Galaxien bis zu Temperaturschwankungen in der kosmischen Hintergrundstrahlung.  Die Ablehnung des Konzeptes - und die dazu notwendige Modifikation der Newton'schen Gravitationsgesetze - ziehe dagegen viele Folgeprobleme nach sich.

Kroupa investigated the existence of dark matter in the local universe – that is, the Milky Way and its hundreds of nearby galaxies. He argued that observations made in this local universe were incompatible with the standard theory. He argued that the current cosmological world-view was no longer tenable and that physics was now faced with the great challenge of developing a new cosmological theory.
Conversely, Simon White argued that dark matter is excellent at explaining the vast majority of observations in the universe – from galaxy clusters and galaxies, to temperature fluctuations in cosmic background radiation. Rejecting the concept, and the modification of Newtonian laws such a rejection would entail, would give rise to a number of problems.
